Umbilical Winch UW05 – Complete Life Extension and System Upgrade

Offshore winch systems are exposed to harsh operating conditions where corrosion, wear, hydraulic contamination and component aging gradually reduce reliability. For Scanmudring’s UW05 umbilical winch, the objective was not simply to repair existing equipment, but to restore, upgrade and prepare the system for continued offshore service.

The project included complete disassembly of the winch, inspection of all major systems, refurbishment of structural components, replacement of hydraulic equipment, upgrades to electrical and control systems, pressure testing, flushing, functional testing and final documentation.

Visual inspections performed prior to the overhaul revealed significant corrosion on hydraulic components, aging hoses, worn surface protection and equipment that had been exposed to years of offshore operation. The refurbishment programme addressed both visible deterioration and hidden wear discovered during dismantling.

The completed project represented a full life-extension package with a contract value exceeding NOK 2.15 million.

Scoope Of Work

Kverneland Aqua acted as the main contractor responsible for project management, procurement, mechanical refurbishment, hydraulic upgrades, electrical modifications, testing, documentation and final delivery of the overhauled winch system.

Complete Mechanical Disassembly

The winch was dismantled into its major assemblies, including drum, gearbox, hydraulic power unit, hydraulic tank, spooling system and associated support structures. This provided access for inspection, refurbishment and replacement of worn components.

Structural Refurbishment & Surface Treatment

The framework was stripped, repaired where required and prepared for offshore-grade surface treatment. Structural steel components were blasted and coated according to NORSOK painting requirements to improve corrosion resistance and extend service life.

Hydraulic System Upgrade

A major portion of the project involved upgrading the hydraulic system. New hydraulic hoses, stainless steel piping, fittings, filters and upgraded hydraulic components were installed. Existing hydraulic oil was filtered to NAS Class 6 cleanliness standards where suitable.

Drive System Modernisation

The winch received upgraded drive components, including a new hydraulic motor, new valve block and refurbishment of the gearbox assembly. Brake components were replaced and inspected to ensure reliable operation during offshore deployment.

Electrical & Control System Improvements

A new stainless-steel control panel was manufactured and installed together with upgraded control functions, instrumentation and electrical integration. Electrical cabinets were cleaned, modified and recommissioned as part of the upgrade programme.

Testing, Documentation & FAT

Following assembly, the hydraulic system underwent pressure testing and flushing before completion of functional testing and FAT. The project also included updated manuals, hydraulic documentation, test reports, hose registers, paint reports and mechanical completion documentation.
